Under the hood of the Challenger SRT8
Dodge has placed the legendary 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that delivers 470 HP and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite these impressive performance numbers, the SRT8 392 delivers up to 23 miles per gallon on the highway with the standard Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission and a dual-disc high performance clutch.
The performance numbers for the 2012 Challenger SRT8 392 are still top notch with a 0-60 mph time in the high 4-second range, a quarter mile time in the mid-12-second range with the automatic transmission (high 12-second range with the manual), and a 0-100-0 mph time in the low 15s. Top speed goes up to 182 mph with the manual transmission and 175 mph with the automatic.
A high performance HEMI V8 needs high performance brakes, so Dodge has opted for the standard SRT performance brake package which includes 13.8 inch (rear) vented/slotted rotors with four-piston Brembo fixed calipers painted red. The three-mode electronic stability control system with knockback mitigation also includes four-wheel ABS, all-speed traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, Brake Assist and Hill-start Assist (HSA). These features allow the Challenger to get from 60-0 mph in just 117 feet.
Inside the Challenger SRT8
Interior color combinations include Dark Slate Gray, and new for 2012 Radar Red/Dark Slate Gray, which adds color to the seats, door bolsters and rear seat armrest.
Power lumbar-equipped front seats are standard. The driver's seat features seatback tilt with memory and an easy to reach release handle, while the front-passenger seat adds tilt and slide with memory, which makes it even easier for passengers to get in and out of the back seat. The optional automatic transmission includes paddle shift controls on both sides of the new contoured palm rests. All audio and Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) controls are accessible from the horizontal spokes on the steering wheel.
The trapezoidal instrument panel features a four-bomb gauge cluster with chromed accent rings and unique SRT graphics. Inside the cluster, the SRT-exclusive Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with performance pages provides the driver with trip information, multimedia information from the Media Center radio, along with instant feedback on 0-60 mph time, 60-0 mph braking, G-forces, one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times.
Under the hood of the Charger SRT8
The 6.1-liter Hemi has been pulled to make way for a larger version that's both more powerful and more efficient. Dodge has fitted the updated sedan with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8, which produces 470 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 470 pound-feet of torque at 4,300 rpm. That's 45 more horses and 50 more pound-feet of twist than the last SRT8. Still, the engineers at SRT have figured out ways to make the new thoroughbred a bit less thirsty at the pump. Fuel economy has been raised by around 25 percent, which means this new-and-improved muscle sedan should approach 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 mpg in combined driving.
From nose to tail, the SRT8 runs 200.3 inches, and if you pace off that distance, you'll arrive around back to find more classic Charger DNA. The lengthy taillamp array spreads across the rump like a wildfire burning with a total of 164 LEDs. Just above the flames sits a rear spoiler that's functional, just like every other vent or angle on the Charger's exterior. Aero engineers have worked hard to make sure the sedan stays stable at speed, all the way up to a 175 mph top end, but they still managed make a sinister-looking sedan.
Inside the Charger SRT8
Inside, however, is a bit of a different story. There's nothing evil about 12-way power-adjustable front seats that are both heated and ventilated. The front passenger space is downright pleasing to the back and bottom, and these aren't sloppy slip-and-slide thrones of yesteryear. Both front buckets are pleasantly bolstered and boast suede inserts that keep us in place during more than few backroad adventures. With our rear gripping the seats, our hands are free wrap around the large, meaty steering wheel, which features a design unique to the SRT family of vehicles.
Dodge has partnered up with Harman Kardon, and their sound engineers have created an audio system that will have you contemplating ditching your home theater setup and lug your flatscreen TV out to the garage. The interior plays host to 900 watts, 19 speakers and a 12-channel amplifier. Harman Kardon has called its GreenEdge speakers into service for this application, which are tuned for maximum efficiency with minimum energy consumption. Working together, the seven 3.5-inch mid-range, seven integrated tweeters, four 6x9-inch subwoofers and one 10-inch subwoofer produce a completely balanced and crisp sound that fills the cabin floor to headliner.
Under the hood of the Chrysler 300 SRT8
Like the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 and 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8, this 300 is fitted with a massive 6.4-liter V8. The 90-degree pushrod-operated 16-valve engine has a cast-iron block with aluminum-alloy heads. With a compression ratio of 10.9:1, and burning premium unleaded fuel, the powerplant is rated at 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is a traditional five-speed torque converter automatic sending power to the rear wheels through a standard Getrag limited-slip differential. According to Chrysler, the 300 SRT8 will sprint to 60 miles per hour in the high four-second range with a quarter mile in the high 12-second range. The sedan's top speed is a reported 175 mph.Even though it is counterproductive to rapid acceleration, standard fuel saver technology will stop fuel flow to half the Hemi's cylinders if the electronic watchdogs determine they aren't needed (EPA fuel economy numbers haven't been released). The system works in conjunction with the active exhaust, which allows hot gasses to flow straight through the mid and rear muffler under engine load.
Inside the Chrysler 300SRT8
The interior starts with a leather-wrapped, heated SRT steering wheel with metal paddle shifters on each side. Integrated into the dashboard is genuine carbon fiber trim, gloss black surrounds and chrome accents. The standard sport seats, upholstered in Alcantara and leather, are heated and ventilated and feature the SRT logo emblazoned on the seatback. The door panels mirror a similar treatment. Underfoot, the accelerator and brake pedals are metal with small rubber nubs for better traction. The car in our photographs was configured with the Radar Red interior, one of two standard colors. For something a bit less boastful, choose the simple black interior or upgrade to the premium leather with Poltrona Frau Foligno upholstery with leather-wrapped door panels, instrument panel, cluster brow and center console side panels - it's quite classy.
